Turmeric

Food is passion but with passion comes healthy and smart cooking. One ingredient that fulfills that passion is turmeric. It comes in many forms like powder, tablets, and raw. The way I enjoy using it is by grating a whole root.

It is a traditional Indian ingredient that is often used to make curry or other Indian and Mediterranean dishes. It has a peppery, warm, and bitter flavor to it and smells like a mix of orange and ginger. The color is bright yellow and comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant with a tough brown skin and deep orange flesh. Used on a grater, it will produce a thick powdery ingredient that can be mixed into any favorite dish to give it a strong and delicious flavor. Mother Nature Network gives a great explanation of all the benefits of turmeric, including commentary from passionate people who use it as well.

  • A study was found that a main component in turmeric blocks enzymes that promote the growth of head and neck cancer.
  • It contains an antioxidant that fights cancer-causing free radicals.
  • It is a potent anti-inflammatory
  • The best way to use the spice is raw by sprinkling it onto vegetables or mixing it with salads and dressings.
  • Comments include that it helps with diabetic nerve pain, allergies, relief for stiff tendons, cramping, and immobility.

One very enjoyable way to use the spice can be with smoothies and Wake Up Word gives an amazing recipe to increase energy and clear the mind:

  • 1 cup hemp or coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple or mango chunks
  • 1 fresh banana
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (can be increased to 1 tsp)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon maca (optional)

Add all ingredients into a blender and process until smooth.

Start incorporating turmeric into your cooking and let me know how it benefits your life! Beautiful day everyone!!  🙂
